An awkward conversation with Grandma

Okay, I’m sure that many of you will agree with me when I say that older people can seem a bit nuts.

  • They not only tend to live in the past but some of the ideas that they come up with are really off the charts.

My grandma is no different. I will never forget the time that she decided to use contact paper on the bathroom floor. She was very proud of herself when she told me that she had installed new flooring in the bathroom. Well, when I went in to check it out I realized what she had done and I had to laugh. Sometimes, when you have to wait out the fact that their idea is not the best it can be a bit awkward. This was the case when my husband went to visit my grandma and check on her one day last summer. When he arrived he found my grandmother is sitting in the living room in her chair with her feet in a bucket of ice water. He didn’t think that this was quite healthy for her so he called me to ask what he should do. First thing I advised him to do was ask her why she was sitting like that and she stated that it was too hot in her house so she was trying to cool off. She recalled doing this when she was a child so she figured it would work fine now as well. The problem came when he tried to explain that it was dangerous for her circulation. I suggested that he go to the store and purchase a small personal cooling device for her instead. So far she seems happy with it and I hope she doesn’t use the bucket of ice anymore.
