When I first got my entry level position, I had a great mentor. She came to me about 6 months into the job to sort of take my temperature. While she was my boss, it wasn’t really about job performance. My mentor was hoping to impart some reality to what otherwise seems like a glamorous job. She just wanted to make sure that if I continued my career, it would come with plenty of time away and relocations. Thankfully, I listened and all of the transfers were not a surprise. Fortunately, I really paid attention and learned to take advantage of the corporate apartments. Otherwise, I think I might have blown a gasket. The first transfer, I chose to go with the furnished apartment for rent route. While it was nice to have a short term rental option, I still had to store my stuff and then look for another place to live. However, by the time I got about 7 months into that new lease, I was moved to another project. That is just how this industry works. Granted, it pays very, very well and I get to live in some really cool locations. But, it’s not easy. Corporate apartments and now executive housing has changed all that for me. I now have a home base near the corporated headquarters. There is where I call home. But with the executive housing option, I can get temporary housing for months at a time to work whatever project that I am needed on. Perhaps I will have a more settled life in a decade or so. But right now, corporate apartments have really made life a lot easier.
