It’s difficult when you know what you’re doing, but can’t be hired.

So, I was about to go to school to learn all the things that I already knew

From the time I was eight years old, my father had me working with him. My dad owned the local HVAC company, and he had no problem taking me with him when he went on some of his calls. At first I was nothing more than his gopher. He would have me run for whatever tools he needed or whatever parts he needed out of the service van. By the time I was 13, I was almost 6 foot tall and weighed nearly 200 pounds. I had no fat on my body, but I was strong. All the work that my father had given me to do over those five years, had me able to do more than most men who were twice my age. At that point, my father was teaching me how to install furnaces and air conditioning units. I already knew how to service both AC and heating systems, and I was able to repair most of the HVAC systems that were out there. When I turned 18, I wanted to get a job as an HVAC technician. I couldn’t believe how difficult it was to get a job just because I didn’t have the proper training. My dad told me that if I wanted to work as an apprentice for a year, he would send me to HVAC school while doing the apprenticeship and then I could get my certification. So, I was about to go to school to learn all the things that I already knew. It didn’t seem fair to me, but at least I was going to be able to do the job of a HVAC technician.
