Short Cycling AC System

While I was at home last weekend, I realized that my house wasn’t feeling as cool as it usually does.

I was sweating inside my own home and that wasn’t normal since I wasn’t doing anything that would normally cause me to sweat.

I looked at my thermostat and it said that it was five degrees warmer than I had set the temperature to. Five degrees was a big difference and I could feel it. Since it was the weekend, I called the HVAC company and prayed that someone would have availability to come see my AC system. While I waited for my AC system to kick on, I listened to my AC system as it cut on and off. As I was listening, I realized that the AC would cut on and then it would cut off abruptly. It sounded like my AC system was trying to cool my house but it would shut down before it even started. When the HVAC technician arrived, I told him about what I was noticing and he immediately labeled it as short cycling. He made it sound like it was super normal which brought me comfort. The first thing he did after telling me that my AC system was short-cycling was he turned off the AC system. Then, he replaced the air filter. The air filter was layered in dust and debri and he claimed this as the source of the short cycling. After installing a new air filter, he cut the AC system back on and he waited to make sure it began running properly. To my surprise, the short cycling stopped and the air began flowing normally again.
