I had completely remodeled my new home, except for my bedroom and the living room.
- The kitchen and bathrooms needed the most work, and new plumbing needed to be installed.
Since my bedroom and the living room only needed cosmetic work, I saved them for last. Both rooms had the ugliest wallpaper on the walls, and in many places, it had loosened. I started tearing at the loose pieces of wallpaper until I had a complete wall uncovered. I then began tearing the loose wallpaper from the other walls. When I got to the last wall, it surprised me to find that there was wood under the wallpaper and not the wallboard. The wood seemed to be slats that were easily broken, and I thought I felt cold air coming through. I took my hammer and began pulling the slats off the wall. I couldn’t have been more shocked or happy when I uncovered an old fireplace hidden beneath the wood and wallpaper. This made me wonder if there could be a fireplace in the bedroom, but I had to complete this room before working there. I called someone who could inspect the fireplace and tell me if I could use it. When the fireplace expert showed up, he told me he used to keep this fireplace running. The last owners didn’t want it, and they just closed it over. I knew I had hit upon an alternate form of heating in case the power had ever gone out. That’s when I asked if he knew if there were more fireplaces in the house?
