I learned to be extremely careful with space heaters and power outlets

I was reading on my bed when I started to smell burning plastic.

Too many people are foolish with extension cords and surge strips. I once went to a friend’s house and saw that he had three surge strips in tandem. One was plugged into the wall, a second was plugged into the first strip, and the third was plugged into the second. When I walked over to the wall outlet to get a closer look, you could see some of the plastic on the outlet melting from heat generated by the surge strips. If I hadn’t shown him the damage, his house could have burned down while was away and unaware of the problem. Another time I found that my girlfriend had plugged a mini fridge into one of those cheap white extension cords that you find at the dollar store. Those are not grounded cords so she had to use a “cheater plug,” also known as an AC ground lifter. They allow you to take a grounded cord and plug it into an ungrounded outlet or extension cable. I don’t have much room to talk as I made an even dumber mistake a few years ago when I took a high-watt space heater and plugged into one of those expansion plugs that you put into an electrical outlet and it goes from two outlets and turns it into eight. I had the space heater, a coffee maker, and my laptop plugged into the expander all at once. I was reading on my bed when I started to smell burning plastic. Wondering if something inside the space was getting too hot and off gassing, I took a closer look. I was horrified when I saw smoke coming off the wall outlet as the plastic around the space heater cord melted onto the floor. If I hadn’t been there when it happened, my bedroom no doubt would have caught on fire.
