Teaching a class about HVAC

As a teacher, I am always looking for the best ways to teach my students.

It’s important to me that I keep my students interested and up to date on the newest methods and technologies.

I have been teaching HVAC repair at my local high school for awhile now. Recently the school cut our budget, so the available test air conditioners we have to work with has been lowered to only 2. I have a couple buddies that work in the HVAC business so I gave them a call to see what we could do. One of my friends had the idea to bring the class into his HVAC shop and get hands on experience in a real business. I thought this was an amazing idea, especially since I know that he works with the newest air conditioners and furnaces. Last week my students got the opportunity to install new smart thermostats as well as learn to refurbish old AC units. We have set up a program with the HVAC business where we get to work on old AC units they have removed. I am able to teach my students about air filters and debri removal, and my friends HVAC business gets free work on their old units! Overall the budget cuts have made a big impact on my class, for the better. The students love hands on work, and a few of them have applied to be apprentice HVAC technicians. I even had one student that showed a lot of promise start working full time with an HVAC provider after showing them how much knowledge he had without formal training.
