The origin of our HVAC company

My dad runs the company now, but only because Grandpa gave it to him after retiring.

  • Grandpa built this place with his own two hands, started as the only employee, and worked for forty years to turn it into what it has become.

He may be mean as a snake, but he is very smart, with a mind for business, and an indomitable spirit. I asked him what made him get into this line of work, because back then it was a very strange path for a farm worker to take. “How did you get into the air conditioning business?” I asked him, and he said :”because I was tired of being hot.” He told how at the time, most people didn’t have air conditioning, especially farming folk. In the big cities cooling systems were starting to catch on with the upper classes, but there wasn’t much tech out here, aside from using a fan. For my grandpa it was as simple as driving off the farm and into the city, where he went to a series of ventilation specialists looking for an apprenticeship. It would have been foolish to attempt to learn about cooling without learning about heating, because they are two sides of the same coin. The more stories he tells, the less details he gives, but the end of the story is that he moved back out to the country and founded the first HVAC company in this region. I think he is glad to be retired and be done with the paperwork, but he still complains about how Dad runs the HVAC company.
