Waiting for dawn

I laid awake for the entire night when I went to my cabin.

When I realized we had a squirrel in the chimney, the only thought I had was to smoke him out. I worried about the squirrel and I hoped he was smart enough to go up the chimney to safety and to not stay there and die. My husband tried to make me feel better, but I didn’t want to be cheered. When 4AM came around, I couldn’t lay there any longer. I got up and lit the stove so I could start some breakfast. My husband always got up at 5AM and I wanted to have a nice breakfast for him. I heard a noise and there was the squirrel, inside the fire cage over the fireplace. He was looking over at me, like I had put him in jail. I went over to the cage and I sat down on the floor to talk to him. I told him how dangerous a fireplace was and that it could hurt him. He cocked his head and chattered. I told him that I wanted him out of the fireplace and that he had to go home. I swear I saw him shake his head no. I even rattled the fireplace cover, but he wouldn’t move. He kept looking over toward the empty pantry. I moved the fireplace cover and he headed over to the pantry. I heard him/her chattering and I sneaked a peak. There were three baby squirrels and she was wrapped around them. It was no wonder she didn’t want to leave the house. She had babies.
