I think we’re in a much better place than we were just a year ago. That’s because dad is now pretty much settled here and the first Summer is under his belt. I remember my first Summer down here. I moved here for a job after college and never left. Well, why would I? This region is everythgin I could want when it comes to a home base. For sure, this region comes with a whole lot more air conditioning than where I came from. But I’d much rather deal with more air conditioning if that means much, much less demand for heating. When it comes to heating, I don’t even bother with the heat pump any longer. Instead, I break out a space heater if we need to kick the chill out. But when it comes to heat and humidity, it’s different down here. And my dad really had a hard time with that transition. I finally got him to upgrade the HVAC equipment and put the family home on the market. My sister has her hands full with all her kids so, I suggested that maybe I could look after dad. He stayed with me for the first month until we were able to find him a nice little two bedroom house. It’s perfect size and it came with a complete makeover when it came to the HVAC equipment. Still, dad was stunned by the level of heat here and would hardly come out of the air conditioning. Slowly but surely, I helped him adjust his schedule to avoid the peak heating hours of the day but still get outside. I’m thinking he’s got the hang of it now as he was so pleased to share his air conditioning savings strategy with me just the other day.
