My mama was much older than most of my classmates’ mothers. My mama was truly my Grandma and she provided for me when my real mother passed away from cancer. I was only three when it happened, so I actually had no memories of her. I never knew any father, however papa. Six months ago I got married and moved out of state. I was so homesick, my partner told me my friend and I were going home for my birthday. My buddy and I drove the 2000 miles so I could see mama and papa. They put us in my aged home office, and for the first time in my life, I realized how uncomfortable it was there. There was no air conditioning, and the window faced in a direction that didn’t get any of the breeze. I asked mama why there weren’t any air conditioning units in the house. She laughed and told me they were a frivolous purchase. Papa was a miser and refused to buy window air conditioning units, portable air conditioning units, or a central air conditioning unit. He thought the air conditioning was totally unnecessary. He only had a furnace because mama could not bundle up enough to get warm. I laughed, but I remembered going to a friend’s house and the air conditioning. I asked mama if I could buy a window air conditioning component for our room so my friend and I had AC while going to see. She just didn’t care, however asked if my friend and I wanted to take it with us when my friend and I left. Papa jumped up and said if wanted to buy an AC component for the room my friend and I could. He would just put it in the home office when my friend and I left. Papa was just cheap.
