He stopped to let me digest the information he had just read to me. When he continued, his voice got even more agitated. They based the Nest Thermostat on a machine learning algorithm. During the first weeks, users need to regulate the thermostat so they can provide the reference data set. My husband paused again and stared at me, while I stared while trying not to laugh. He read again. The thermostat can learn people’s schedule,at which temperature they are used to, and when. By using built-in sensors and phones’ locations, it can shift into energy saving mode when it realizes no one is home. I asked him if we were getting one. He looked at the old thermostat on the wall and told me there ain’t one hanging there now, and there never will be. I already knew that would be his answer.
